At the Student Senate meeting Thursday night, Rachel Paine Caufield and Tony Tyler addressed student concerns regarding how ticket allocation was handled for the Democratic Debate last Saturday.

The number of tickets allotted to Drake was regulated by CBS and the DNC. Caufield explained that from this block the tickets were distributed through a lottery. The lottery was 100 percent randomized, with 85 percent of tickets given to students and 15 percent to staff, which reflected the request of the tickets.

An alternative list was created for those unclaimed. Three tickets were given at the last minute, and due to time, Caufield and debate partners decided the President of Drake Democrats and the organizers of the Pancakes and Politics event should receive the tickets.

This totaled 96 percent randomized tickets that went to students and staff. Other students may have received tickets for various reasons like through internships and campaigns.

Tyler then explained how the process worked for the Caitlyn Jenner watch party. The event was a private rental party, which means that Tyler was under a contract of confidentiality. The students picked to attend the event were identified as ‘self-select’ meaning they are heavily involved in organizations on campus.

Caufield and Tyler assured students there will be more opportunities for them to be involved politically in the future.
