What made you decide to run for this position?

I decided to run after serving this past semester as a Bright College Senator and realizing that this role is so much more than just a title. I got to see firsthand that senators aren’t just sitting in meetings, we’re actually able to be the voice for students and be part of real change on campus. That experience made me want to step into a larger role where I can represent an even broader range of students. I genuinely enjoy talking to people, hearing their experiences, and making sure those perspectives don’t just stay in conversations but turn into action.

What are your goals for this position? Are there specific issues you hope to address through initiatives or projects in this position?

My goals center around community, inclusion, and representation, but in ways students can actually feel in their daily lives. I want to help create a campus where connection doesn’t depend on who you already know. That looks like supporting more shared spaces and better collaboration between organizations, so students from different majors, years and backgrounds can naturally interact. I also want to focus on inclusion that’s experienced, not just talked about, making sure events, opportunities, and resources are accessible in terms of cost, timing, and visibility. And finally, I want to make Student Senate feel more transparent and approachable, so students understand what’s happening and feel confident that their voices are being heard and acted on.

What experience has prepared you for this position?

Serving as a Bright College Senator has been the most impactful experience preparing me for this role. It’s given me insight into how Senate works, how decisions are made, and how to effectively advocate for students. Beyond that, I’m someone who naturally builds connections. Whether it’s through conversations, involvement, or just showing up, I’ve developed the ability to engage with a wide range of people and make them feel comfortable sharing their thoughts. I’m also determined and empathetic, which helps me not only listen to students but stay committed to following through on what they need.

As a Senator At-Large, you would chair a committee. What would you bring to the table to help the committee be successful in serving the student body?

I would bring a balance of structure, collaboration and open communication. I’m someone who can keep conversations going even in uncomfortable or quiet spaces, which is important when you’re trying to make sure everyone feels heard. I would create an environment where committee members feel comfortable sharing ideas, while also keeping us focused and productive. I also really value collaboration, so I would work to make sure the committee is not operating in isolation but is actively connecting with other groups and students to make our work more impactful.

How would you make sure you are aware of the needs of the student body?

For me, it starts with consistent, genuine conversations. I’m someone who enjoys meeting new people and building connections, so I would intentionally engage with students across different majors, organizations and social circles, not just the ones I’m already part of. I would also focus on creating accessible ways for students to share feedback, whether that’s through informal conversations, campus presence, or clear communication channels. Most importantly, I would prioritize listening over just hearing, making sure I’m not only collecting input but truly understanding it and bringing it back to Senate to turn into action.

How do you plan to balance this role with your other commitments?

Balancing responsibilities comes down to being intentional with my time and staying organized. As a student involved in multiple areas, I’ve learned how to prioritize what matters and manage my commitments effectively. This role is something I genuinely care about, so I would make sure it remains a priority while still maintaining balance with my academics and other responsibilities.

Why should the student body vote for you?

Students should vote for me because I’m someone who is not only willing to listen but committed to acting on what I hear. I bring experience from currently serving in Senate and my past leadership experiences, but also a genuine passion for connecting with people and understanding their experiences. I want every student to feel seen, valued, and represented regardless of their background or involvement on campus. I’m determined, empathetic and approachable, and I will work to make sure student government feels like something you can understand, trust and be a part of.

What At-Large position are you running for?

I am running for the Facilities and Technology at-large Senate position.

What made you decide to run for this position?

I decided to run for this position as I was previously appointed to the role for the 39th  Student Senate session. Prior to being appointed, serving the student body was merely a thought, not something I truly expected to take on headfirst the way that I did!

What are your goals for this position? Are there specific issues you hope to address through initiatives or projects in this position?

My goal for this position is to continue transparency between the student body and faculty and staff on issues that affect us day-to-day. As I already have an official Senate account, I am looking forward to continuing communication with the student body, with updates on projects, issues, and network! My passion is for students to get the answers they deserve, and I am determined to.

What experience has prepared you for this position?

This last year on Senate, I have curated student-serving projects, like the JSC Bathroom Takeover collab with UNITY, the Student AI Recommendation Policy (SAIRP) with my fellow senators, communicating on Workday developments and expressing concerns of the student body to whoever can help address the issue ASAP. I believe that my continued commitment and passion to be an inclusive voice for all students, and my major in the technology field (computer science) has prepared me to continue in this role. As a student firsthand, I understand the frustrations on network developments and issues, for example, and put my energy to getting issues resolved.

As a Senator At-Large, you would chair a committee. What would you bring to the table to help the committee be successful in serving the student body?

As I would chair the Senate IT Committee, I hope to continue to bring innovative ideas, and the students’ voices to faculty.

How would you make sure you are aware of the needs of the student body?

I would make sure the needs of the student body is heard, by continuing to make myself available and aware of things on campus. When I am brought an issue, I make it my first priority to find someone, like faculty or staff, who can get the answer.

How do you plan to balance this role with your other commitments?

I plan to balance this role with my other commitments, with taking care of myself. It is important to serve others and know when you need a second as well. Transparency, on my part, is imperative to my campaign, and I believe the student body deserves it.

Why should the student body vote for you?

I believe the student body should vote for me, as I believe your issue is mine. Being in leadership, where students receive clear communication and transparency, support and answers is crucial to me and my beliefs.

Michael McClelland

Michael McClelland (he/him) is a first-year majoring in strategic political communication and politics with a concentration in social justice in urban education.

What At-Large position are you running for?

Civic Engagement Senator

What made you decide to run for this position?

Being a part of groups on campus, I know that students have opinions about everything. I want to make sure that something is being done about the issues they care about at all levels. Student voices can and should be heard, and I want to make sure that they are.

What are your goals for this position? Are there specific issues you hope to address through initiatives or projects in this position?

I want to get students involved beyond just voting, issues aren’t something that are isolated to the ballot box. Whether it’s through volunteering, working or advocating I want to get everyone involved.

What experience has prepared you for this position?

Beyond just Drake, I have been involved in advocacy for years. I’ve worked with the Iowa Food Bank Association, the Iowa State Board of Education and now with Drake Democrats and as a Clerk in the Senate. I’ve seen how things work, and know how to get things done.

As a Senator At-Large, you would chair a committee. What would you bring to the table to help the committee be successful in serving the student body?

Student voice means everything to me, because if students are not happy, who are we serving? As a Student Senate – and Drake as a whole – our job is to provide students with the best experience possible. This means taking into account their opinions and needs.

How would you make sure you are aware of the needs of the student body?

I will do my best to be in constant communication with the student body. Whether that is through formal means (office hours, meetings, etc.), or through informal means (conversations in the halls of Meredith, at a table in Starbucks, wherever).

How do you plan to balance this role with your other commitments?

I am involved in quite a bit, but I know how to balance my time. Serving the student body will be a priority for me, and it is not a job I will take lightly.

Why should the student body vote for you?

It’s simple, I want students to actually have a voice, not just feel like they have one. Students deserve to be heard, and I promise to do just that.

What At-Large position are you running for?

Health and safety.

I wanted to run for this position to help ensure that students feel safe and comfortable on campus. When I talk about safety, I mean physical safety, but I also wanna make sure the students at Drake feel mentally safe.

What are your goals for this position? Are there specific issues you hope to address through initiatives or projects in this position?

My goals for this position would be to ensure the physical safety of the campus and to ensure that if a student does not feel safe, they can bring it to my attention, and I can work with the appropriate resources to try to resolve the issue. An issue I would like to address is that this position currently focuses primarily on students’ physical safety. I want to expand that to the mental safety as well, ensuring that students know all the resources that are available to them if they are feeling mentally unsafe.

Yes, I would chair a committee. I would use the committee to plan on-campus events. ensuring they are in a constant loop of communication with me, as I currently sit on a committee helping plan the spring safety walk.

How would you make sure you are aware of the needs of the student body?

I would be open with everyone. I cannot know every issue taking place on campus, so I plan to hold office hours so students can come and contact me about any issues they see. I will also provide my email and other contact information if the office hours do not work for them.

How do you plan to balance this role with your other commitments?

I’ve always been a very busy person throughout my life. I’ve used that time to master organization and time management, and I would apply those skills if elected to this position to ensure I have time for my education and my duties.

Why should the student body vote for you?

Because I care, this is like a second home for everyone living on and off campus, and I wanna make sure this home is taken care of and that students’ safety and concerns are addressed.
