The Varsity Cinema will present the inaugural Varsity Relays, an overnight movie marathon, from 10 p.m. on April 26 to 10 a.m. on April 27.
The theater will be presenting movies centered around dreams and nightmares, including old and mystery movies.
“We’re gonna have some cool, weird movies that people aren’t necessarily going to see in theaters very often,” Regen Kuker, assistant director of operations at the Varsity Cinema, said.
The Varsity Relays will fundraise for the nonprofit Des Moines Film, which operates the Varsity Cinema. To attend the event, participants have to raise at least $75 for the fundraiser by donating personally or raising money from friends and family.
The Varsity is offering a limited number of sponsored slots for those who don’t have time or cannot fundraise to attend the event. These slots are funded by donors who are unable to attend the event.
Kuker hopes that “anybody who’s daunted by the funding aspect” would be able to be “up in here and enjoying the event.”
