After a six month search and nearly 70 candidates, a search committee recommended Sue Mattison to be Drake’s new provost.
The Times-Delphic was able to ask her some questions so students can get to know her and really find out what a provost does.
What is a provost?
A provost is a senior administrator who serves on the President’s Council in a university and who is the leader for Academic Affairs.
At Drake, Academic Affairs includes leading and managing a number of areas, from academic colleges and schools to the Cowles Library and faculty honors and awards.
This responsibility affects faculty, staff and students’ daily lives.
Why did you apply?
Growing up in Iowa, I always knew of Drake’s awesome reputation. When the position came open, I could not pass up the opportunity to apply, and I’m so excited to be here.
I’m the first person in my family who graduated from college. My mom’s big dream as a girl was to go to Drake and major in journalism, but back in the day, girls didn’t leave home to go to school, so she stayed in Cedar Rapids and attended beauty school. So, I know first-hand the trans-formative impact of a college degree. It not only changed my life, but changed my family and my community.
How are you qualified for this position?
I worked my way up through the faculty ranks and held administrative positions at UNI, then was dean of the College of Professional Studies at UW – Green Bay. I was a paramedic for several years, and am a mother, so I’m ready for anything.
What are your goals for Drake’s campus?
Everything I do is with the overarching goal of providing outstanding educational opportunities for students.
Interacting with the faculty is something I really enjoy; these are some of the smartest people in the world, and it’s an honor to be their colleague.
