“Game of Thrones” said it best, winter is coming. As the cold sets in for good, the urge to wrap up in sweats permanently becomes pretty overwhelming. It’s hard to consider throwing on anything other than a hoodie for the 8 a.m. trek across campus, and snow boots become not only comfortable but also necessary. However, just because Des Moines decides to freeze over for a few months doesn’t mean your fashion sense needs to go on hiatus. Below are my top five winter fashion trends — style advice that can help revive any college student’s winter wardrobe.
Gold Accents
One of my favorite trends this season is gold embellishments. As a self- proclaimed silver girl, it took a lot for me to come around to the revival of gold, but I just can’t resist it — especially when paired with black. Try pairing a geometric, gold statement necklace with an oversized black sweater for class, or a tight black dress with stud detailing for something a little more edgy.

Leather
Leather is a fine line for any fashionista or fashionisto — too much and one can end up looking a like a lost member of a biker gang. The best way to wear leather is through accents: detailing on leggings, leather elbow pads of sweaters or a vest with a patterned dress.

Oversized Shirts
Boxy shapes are here to stay — which is possibly the best news ever for everyone. Gone are the days of corset tops and high-waisted toothpick jeans. Winter is all about oversized blazers, outerwear and sweaters. Though the runway this season used prints in everything, I personally recommend investing in boxy, neutral jackets that you can pair with patterned T-shirts or pants.

Stilettos
As you pack away your summer wedges, replace them with the simple stiletto. This year’s top fashion forecasters predict an end of the chunky heel or pumps — slim heels, pointed toes and basic colors are back. The stiletto works just as well with pumps as it does with boots, although be warned: Ankle-level stiletto boots are classy, but knee-high-level stiletto boots are tacky.

Winter colors
The final trend is seemingly the most obvious: winter colors. Though this may seem like a “duh” moment — picking the right winter colors isn’t always the easiest. I recommend sticking to deep shades of green (like forest green), red (like maroon), purple (like mulberry) and blue (like navy). Dark colors not only look great together, they also look the best paired with neutral or tan accents, like suede heels or thin belts.
