Student Senate appointed new members to seven committees and released its list of 50 Strategic Goals for the 2013-14 year on Thursday night.
Senate unanimously approved appointments to the Campus Advancement, Community Outreach, First-Year Interest, Student Affairs, Student Fees Allocation and Student Services committees at the meeting.
Vice President of Student Life Joey Gale asked all senators and new committee members to start thinking about their goals for the year.
“We want to reflect on them and see what we had planned and if we’ve done that,” Gale said.
The list of 50 Strategic Goals includes establishing an all-night coffee shop, installing printers in residence halls and improving Senate programming. To read the entire list, visit drakesenate.com.
Guest speakers Chris Diebel and Scott Law attended Thursday’s meeting.
Diebel, a Des Moines City Council at-large candidate and two-time Drake University graduate, encouraged students to register to vote. He also distributed absentee ballot requests and asked students to sign a petition that would bring a satellite-polling place to the Drake campus.
Law, first-year director of Drake Security, introduced himself to Senate and welcomed students’ questions and concerns.
“I have an open-door policy,” Law said. “My goal tonight was to come down and say ‘hello’ and who I am, and if you’d like to stop by, I’d love to talk to you.”
In senator reports, Sen. Joshua Schoenblatt said the Dog Days of Finals event will feature up to nine dogs from the Puppy Jake Foundation. Schoenblatt said he also plans to invite Drake live mascot Porterhouse, 2013 Beautiful Bulldog Huckleberry and Drake President David Maxwell’s dog to the event.
Sen. Emily Grimm reminded students that University Avenue will be closed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 29 for Des Moines Move, a health and fitness event.
In other business, the first-year senator campaign began on Sunday. The election is set for Oct. 1.
