Sports Analysis
Week one of the 2025 NFL season has finally wrapped up, and this year is already off to an entertaining start. From surprise victories to nail-biting finishes, many of the league’s superstars showed out over the weekend.
The first official game kicked off on Thursday night in Philadelphia, with the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles taking on the Dallas Cowboys. After some early antics, including Philadelphia’s Jalen Carter being ejected for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, followed by a lengthy weather delay, the Eagles emerged victorious with a score of 24-20 to begin their championship defense with a win.
There was a rare Friday matchup the next day, with the Kansas City Chiefs going up against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil. It was the second-ever NFL game played in Brazil, following last year’s Eagles-Packers matchup. After an exciting game, the Chargers finally snapped their seven-game losing streak against the Chiefs with a 27-21 victory. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw for more than 300 yards with three touchdown passes, two of which were caught by emerging receiver Quentin Johnston. Early on in the game, Xavier Worthy, the Chiefs’ top receiver, was injured after colliding with his own teammate, Travis Kelce. It was later revealed that Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder and will miss an undetermined length of time.
After a Saturday full of exciting college football matchups, the NFL returned in full force with the first full slate of games on Sunday.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traveled to Atlanta to take on the Falcons, where sophomore quarterback Michael Penix Jr. made his first NFL start. After a back-and-forth matchup, the Buccaneers escaped with a win, 23-20, after Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo missed a game-tying field goal attempt as time expired in the fourth quarter.
The Miami Dolphins, who stumbled to the end of last year’s season, traveled to Indianapolis, where Colts quarterback Daniel Jones made his first start since leaving the New York Giants last season. He surprisingly won the starting job this offseason, competing against former top-five pick Anthony Richardson, who was widely thought to be the Colts’ starter coming into the year. Jones led a methodical offense, and Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was intercepted twice as the Colts won 33-8.
The Jacksonville Jaguars debuted Travis Hunter, the second-overall pick, as they hosted the Carolina Panthers. The former Heisman Trophy winner at the collegiate level has generated a significant amount of excitement and anticipation due to his ability to play on both sides of the ball competitively, a skill that is rare in the NFL. Due to the physicality and pace of professional football, it is extremely difficult to play both offensive and defensive snaps in the NFL. However, Hunter has vowed to do so, and while primarily playing wide receiver, he also played on defense. He caught six passes for 33 yards as the Jaguars managed a 26-10 victory.
Aaron Rodgers made his highly anticipated debut as quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the 41-year-old approaches the end of his NFL career. He will turn 42 in December, but he still put on a show against his former team, the New York Jets, throwing for 244 yards and four passing touchdowns. Despite his efforts, the Steelers still trailed the Jets late in the game. With just over a minute to go in the contest, Steelers veteran kicker Chris Boswell nailed a 60-yard field goal to give them the late lead 34-32, which they held onto and stole a victory from the Jets.
On Sunday night, in the primetime matchup, the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills put on an absolute show that ended in a cinematic comeback victory for the Bills. Buffalo’s quarterback, Josh Allen, led the Bills back from a 40-25 deficit in the fourth quarter. He finished with nearly 400 yards passing and four total touchdowns.
With Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson leading the way, Baltimore led late into the game and seemed comfortably in line for the win. However, with just over three minutes left in the contest and the Ravens leading by eight points, star running back Derrick Henry, who finished with 169 rushing yards and two touchdowns, fumbled the football, and the Bills recovered it.
After the turnover, the Bills marched down and scored on a one-yard rush by Josh Allen, only to fail on the two-point conversion attempt and remain losing 40-38. The Bills did manage to get the ball back from Baltimore after using all of their timeouts, and as time expired, 41-year-old veteran kicker Matt Prater nailed a game-winning field goal from 32 yards out, stunning the Ravens 41-40.
Finally, the kickoff week of NFL football ended with a much-anticipated divisional matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears on Monday night at 7:15 pm. The Bears jumped out to a quick lead after scoring a touchdown on their first possession of the game. Last year’s squad only scored 27 first-quarter points throughout the entire 17-game season, so it was a welcome sight for Bears fans. Chicago led late into the third quarter, headed by quarterback Caleb Williams, who finished with two total touchdowns. The Bears’ defense stifled the Vikings for much of the game, including three sacks and an interception touchdown by Bears defensive back Nahshon Wright. However, in the fourth quarter, the momentum shifted entirely, and after two touchdown passes and an additional rushing touchdown by Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy, Minnesota seized the lead 27-17. Although the Bears scored a late touchdown, they were unable to score again, and time expired, leaving their fans shocked and once again disappointed as they started their season with a loss after the 24-27 defeat.
Week one featured many big plays and surprising moments. There were ejections, injuries and late-game heroics throughout the league this past weekend. If one thing’s for certain, the NFL is unpredictable, and fans should strap in for what is surely to be another exciting and dramatic season.
