At the Student Senate meeting on Oct. 10, Sarah Fey was sworn in as the new University Services Senator At-Large. The role was vacated when Petya Haralanova left the position this academic year.
Fey is a digital media production and advertising major. She has already worked closely with fellow senators in a variety of different roles. Fey and Elliot Nelson, the current Academic Affairs Senator, have worked with together several times in the past. They both are interns at the World Food Prize. Through these experiences they’ve shared, Nelson believes that Fey will bring something new to the Student Senate.
“I think Sarah brings a lot of perspective that isn’t necessarily represented in the Senate at this point in time,” Nelson said. “She has a lot of ideas and initiatives to back up things relating to University Services. Also, Sarah has a unique connection on campus to the journalism school and school media, like The Times-Delphic, which will provide her insight into how she can broadcast out University Services to her students.”
Fey said she is excited to serve as the University Services Senator for the remainder of the 38th session.
“I’m really looking forward to connecting with the Drake student body and helping make campus resources more accessible to everyone,” Fey said. “Many students aren’t fully aware of all the services and opportunities available to them, and I want to help bridge that gap so they can get the most out of their Drake experience.”
As University Services Senator, Fey will lead the University Services Committee, which she is currently organizing. This role also involves working closely with various departments on campus, including Access and Success, Drake Dining, Drake Public Safety, Residence Life and the Student Services Center. She will also work with administrators like the Chief Administration Officer.
“So far at Drake, I’ve had a range of experiences that I believe have prepared me well for this role,” Fey said. “As a sophomore, I’ve already had the chance to meet and work with different departments across campus.”
Fey has had to work with Drake Dining in the past, so she feels that she will be able to work with the University to accomplish her goals.
“Over the summer, I discovered that I’m gluten intolerant, which meant that returning to campus would require adjustments. To make sure I had dining options, I worked with both Access and Success and Drake Dining. Experiences like this have given me a solid foundation to support other students through this role,” Fey said.
To Fey, it’s very important that students feel comfortable enough to utilize the University Services that all students have access to.
“I really hope to make a lasting impact by creating stronger connections between students and the resources available to them,” Fey said. “I want students to feel confident that they can turn to departments like Access and Success, Drake Dining and Residence Life when they need support. One of my main goals is to make students more aware of what these departments offer and to help address anything that might prevent students from fully enjoying their time on campus. Ultimately, I want to make everyone feel seen, supported and empowered during their time at Drake.”
