Hey, sports fans!
Drake intramurals is off to an exciting start this year. First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Haley Bosco, and I am a senior and the intramural supervisor. I am fortunate enough to sit behind a table, watch officials officiate and chatter with my great colleagues about which fans need to go home. Along with making sure you have your Drake IDs at games (please don’t forget), we actually enjoy watching everyone play and we enjoy playing ourselves.
The officiating staff is made up of friendly faces; they are your roommates, classmates and fellow Drake peers. We love the sports just as much as you do and we have all been putting in diligent hours of work, such as learning and training how to manage play, applying first aid and politely refusing players without their Drake IDs (seriously, don’t come without it).
But beyond the same old rules and regulations of intramurals, we have a few new helpful aspects that have been added to the program this year.
Our new online registration helps to organize and establish the teams and leagues for each sport. The website is www.imleagues.com, and you should use your Drake e-mail address to set up an account (click “Create Account” in the upper-right corner of the page). Once your account is created, you have the option of creating a team as a captain or joining a team. If you are simply planning on joining a team, the captain can also add each player’s e-mail and you will receive an invite.
Once you have been officially added to Drake’s system, your account is active until graduation and you may continue to add and create teams each year.
The most important element to remember is to make sure you have been confirmed on the league site before the playoffs start. The best way to do this is to check in with the officials or supervisors before a game and make sure your name is on the printed roster.
Another feature of the online leagues is the ability to add yourself as a “free agent.” Yes, you are that much closer to professional status. As a “free agent” you can be added to teams that are short players or looking for a few more subs.
In addition, if you are a captain looking to fill more spots you can request to show that when creating a team. This is a great way to meet new people and it often relieves some of the difficulty presented by the lack of interest in your group of friends for a particular sport.
The other addition to our program this year is this weekly column. Our main goal is to keep you entertained and updated with news, results and information regarding Drake intramurals. This week marked our first week of fall competition with the opening of volleyball. All of the men’s, women’s and co-rec teams are well underway with some of the most creative team names I have ever seen (another crucial aspect to your team’s success).
If you are still looking to get involved, the upcoming fall sports are flag football and outdoor soccer – both of which only offer all men or all women teams. For every sport you may choose to be in a competitive or recreational league. The manager meeting for flag football was yesterday, but you may contact intramural coordinator Matt Gasser ([email protected]) if you are still interested. The manager meeting for outdoor soccer is today at 5 p.m. in the Drake Fieldhouse classroom. Also, if you are ever interested in being employed as an official, contact Gasser as well.
