Drake University and Des Moines Area Community College mutually agreed to end their legal battle over the Drake “D” logo on Jan. 9, ending an over one-year-long lawsuit.
Drake first filed suit on July 8, 2024, claiming that DMACC infringed Drake’s federally registered trademark by using its “D” logo. DMACC then countersued for defamation. In Nov. 2024, a federal judge ordered DMACC to stop using their “D” logo. In March 2025, U.S. Chief District Judge Stephanie Rose dismissed DMACC’s defamation claim.
On Jan. 9, DMACC and Drake put out a shared press release.
“Drake University and Des Moines Area Community College have reached a mutual agreement that will end litigation regarding disputed logo use,” the press release said. “Drake and DMACC have been working together closely to resolve the issue outside of the courts and are glad to have reached a signed resolution. Both parties look forward to continuing their long-standing partnership and shared programs in service to current and future generations of students.”
Both DMACC and Drake have no further comment on the release.
