The Drake Student Activities Board aimed to cater to a variety of interests with its Halloween Spooktacular event on Wednesday.
“The goal of SAB this year is really to serve the campus in the best way we can by including everybody we can,” said Jack Harrington, the president of the organization.
The annual event launched a decade ago. In the years since, the SAB has been working to evolve it while honoring some traditions.
For instance, the haunted tunnels were back this year — but better, Harrington said.
“Something [SAB] decided this year is we want to be so, so attentive to every inch of that place,” Harrington said. “I don’t think there’s a single inch of the tunnels that did not have extreme thought put into it.”
The SAB also introduced a new activity to the annual event: pumpkin painting.
“That’s something that we decided needed to happen,” Harrington said. “We’ve seen that in pretty much all of our events this year — [that] people love arts and crafts.”
Building on the variety of the event, the Halloween Spooktacular also had a pumpkin-shaped mechanical bull, inflatable basketball and eyeball cup pong.
Red Bull Student Marketeer Walker Rice was at the event teaching students how to play Red Bull Tetris on their phones. Even as an Iowa State University student, Rice said he was enjoying the variety of activities.
“The event is super fun,” Rice said. “I love the dog. I love the food. It’s a great event.”
By “the dog,” Rice meant Drake’s very own Griff II, who was taking photos with students in his jack-o-lantern costume.
Between the crafts, games and attractions, SAB aimed to make the Halloween Spooktacular something everybody could enjoy. It’s part of the larger goal the organization has for the year.
