Jane Hoe: How to take it down South

Hoe is the TD’s anonymous sex columnist. She is a student at Drake and can be reached at janehoe.drake@gmail.com

It’s going to come up at some point in time in your relationship, but let’s address it — the art of “going down on your partner.”

Oral sex is always a hot topic on college campuses. Do you shave down there? Do you not shave down there? How rough is too rough? What’s normal down there?

It’s all a discussion that you have to have with your partners and what you’re comfortable doing.

Sure, giving a blowjob sounds like its easy work, but once you’re down there, it starts to get a little more complicated.

I bet you think that oral sex is safe sex because there is no penetration (technically). But, there is still a risk of contracting such STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV/AIDS and the ever popular syphilis.

So, is it acceptable to wear a condom or dental dam when going down on your partner? You should. It’s safer, but you and your partner have to have that discussion and possibly get tested together, just to be safe.

Anyway, back to the not-so-simple-act of going down. Oral sex can be better than vaginal or anal sex if you’re in a hurry or just don’t feel like it. Going about how to have oral sex is also sort of tricky. Positioning can make all the difference. There is nothing worse than having your jaw worked for 10 minutes when you’re uncomfortable. Trust me, you don’t want your jaw locking up at the wrong moment. That just gets awkward…and messy.

Other than that, just go for it. Take one for the team and go down south for a while.

One professional tip, though: do not bite. It’s not a mozzarella stick, and you don’t want to be that person who made that embarrassing rookie move. This isn’t a four-course meal, and it definitely shouldn’t be treated like one. On another note, always take directions from your partner. It’s all on a learning curve, so getting tips and hints allow you to better pleasure your partner.

Technique comes with practice, and you’ll eventually be able go down like a pro. But before then, you’re just going to have to keep going on down to the valley of love.

As for hygiene down there, just keep it clean. No one likes to be reminded of that weird smell that comes from Hubbell during his or her sexual escapades. So, what I’m trying to say is just be clean and shower frequently, if not daily, just in case.

As for hair or no hair, that’s just a personal preference. Be adventurous one day and just go for it. It’ll grow back eventually anyway. Sexual landscaping is just par for the course and there is no right way to have your hair sculpted. Just be careful: one wrong move, and well, your doctor might ask some questions that you don’t want to answer.

Ladies, you could be going in the right direction by choosing to have your partner go down on you. The National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior found that women are more likely to orgasm when they engage in various forms of sex acts that include oral sex. That same survey found that most men and women in their 20s and 30s have participated in oral sex in the past three months.

So, Bulldogs, as I say in the playpen, get down and dirty and send me your sexual questions. I’m here to answer them all, and trust me: your kink can’t shock me.

I have a sincere question regarding this column. I haven’t been able to find an article or a decent youtube video explaining how to perform oral sex on a female.

How about something detailing intricacies of “eating at the y?”
