Our first sports of the season are wrapping up within the next couple weeks. Already, we have a handful of intramural champions who are rocking their brand new bro-tanks and T-shirts. So here is a quick highlight of all of our current volleyball 2013-2014 intramural champions.
The first of our intramural champions to be crowned was Competitive Co-Rec. Soapy Dirth earned their second consecutive intramural title this year. Not only did they clinch their repeat championship, they did it in style. The team went undefeated this year 3-0 in the regular season and finished off their championship run against the second place team Ball Glazers.
Next up is our fraternity champions, FIJI. The FIJI versus SigEp championship game was an intense one. Both teams brought fans out in huge numbers, keeping supervisors busy. Fans supporting their fellow brothers surrounded the court cheering loudly at every point. The match went for three games and was well fought by both teams. Eventually, FIJI took the title and the shirts.
Women’s league champion Delta Gamma played against the Gypsies two weeks ago. Even with a complicated schedule due to forfeits, DG was the clear champion from the sorority league. They team matched up against the women’s combined league champion Gypsies. Gypsies played without many of its lead players, and DG capitalized on that absence. DG clinched their title in only two games.
Co-rec recreational also finished their season the same night as DG. Phi Dex played Kiss My Ace in the championship game. This was another well-fought match.
Phi Dex won the first game with certainty. The second game wasn’t in Phi Dex’s favor. Kiss My Ace came back to win the second game and force a third game. In the end, though, Phi Dex won and took home the championship shirts.
It is easy to forget about our smaller sports or tournaments, but that doesn’t mean our champions deserve fewer accolades.
Racquetball is a sport that too often gets forgotten about at intramurals. Jake Goodman is our intramural racquetball tournament champion.
Another tournament usually forgotten about is our fall golf tournament. Team Chris Hooks It A Lot won this year. It is too bad bro-tanks are not appropriate golfing attire.
The final day of outdoor sports should be Nov 1. Also, Nov. 1 is going to be a big day for intramurals.
Some participants may remember that last year the all-university championship for flag football was played at Drake Stadium. This year we are going to do the same for both men’s and women’s championship.
Our rule reminder for this week is inspired by our most recent intramural sport, co-rec basketball. Basketball requires every player to wear the same color and have a number.
In soccer and football we require teams to wear the same color but they don’t have to have a number on their shirt. In basketball we need jerseys with numbers to accurately record personal fouls. If a team shows up without numbers on their jerseys, players will have to wear ones we provide.
