MEN’S
Sophomore Connor Steele led Drake at the Jim Colbert Invitational hosted by Kansas State with a 24th-place finish. The Bulldogs played their best golf in the tournament’s final round on Tuesday with a team score of 307.
Steele (83-78-73=234) finished one-over par in the last round at the Jim Colbert Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan. Drake (317-314-307=938) placed seventh in the eight-team event. Idaho (297-285-292=874) won the title by 12 strokes.
Other top finishers for the Bulldogs included redshirt freshman David Leland (74-82-79=235) and freshman Dane Worley (80-77-78=235) in 28th, freshman Blake Huser (81-77-81=239) in 36th and junior Ben Lyons (82-86-77=245) in 42nd.
Drake has a quick turnaround this weekend. They will travel to Chicago to compete in the DePaul Invitational. The Bulldogs play all day Saturday and Sunday in the three-round tournament.
WOMEN’S
Sophomore Hadley Jennings tied for 26th, but Drake struggled in the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout on Monday and Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (332-326-331=989) finished 13th out of 14 teams in Tulsa, Okla. The tournament was hosted by Oral Roberts and the teams competed at the Meadowbrook Country Club.
Jennings (85-77-76=238) was the top finisher for the Drake women. Redlands Community College (305-312-304=921) won the title by two strokes over Arkansas State.
Other top finishers for Drake were freshman Danielle Brooks (84-83-81=248) in 51st, freshman Kimmy Askelson (84-82-86=252) in 59th, junior Chelsey Falk (81-88-88=257) in 64th and senior Paige Menze (83-84-91=258) in 66th.
“We have definitely got some areas to improve on,” head coach Leanne Smith said in a Drake athletics press release. “They all got pretty beaten up out there, and now we will look forward to having some time off before we return to action at Missouri State.”
The Bulldogs will be back on the course in the Payne Stewart Memorial Tournament on Oct. 17-18.
