It seems that the Drake University women’s soccer  team can’t catch a break. After a disappointing loss Friday, Southeast Missouri State beat the Bulldogs 2-1 Sunday.

“We played well overal but are getting hammered this season when we make mistakes,” said head coach Lindsey Horner.

At the 20:32 mark, senior Brittany Schuling scored a surprising goal for Drake.

This allowed the Bulldogs to hold onto the lead until the 85th minute when Southeast Missouri State’s Natasha Minor got a shot past junior goalkeeper Andrea Swanson, tying the game.

Drake had a fighting chance for victory in the 98th minute when senior Paige Dusek nearly had a shot go in the net, only to see it saved by the Redhawks goalkeeper.

It was then that the two teams went into overtime, the Bulldogs still hopeful to take their first victory of the season.

As the result of a bad coin toss, the Bulldogs had to defend into the wind.

“During the first overtime I wanted to kill the game until we got into the second overtime,” Horner said.

At first, the minutes trickled by, with the score still tied. Then, with 17 seconds remaining, Southeast Missouri State’s Erin Shulman delivered the golden goal to win the game for the Redhawks.

“When they scored so close to the end of the period on a very basic build up, I felt for my players,” Horner said.

Throughout the game, the Bulldogs dominated offensively, with a 24-14 margin on shots.

Freshmen Kayla Armstrong and Rebecca Roberts led both teams with a game-high five shots for Drake while Dusek and junior Ashlie Stokes added four shots apiece.

“We created plenty of scoring opportunities,” Horner said. “But we need to be sharper in the backline and put teams away when we have the chance.”

The Bulldogs hit the road this Friday to play Eastern Illinois at 3:30 p.m.
