The Bulldogs started off their weekend of matches with a conference game against Oral Roberts on Friday, March 25 at 5 p.m.
Drake Men’s tennis started their match off with quick wins in the doubles matches. At doubles three, redshirt sophomore Reid Jarvis and junior Matt Clegg won their match 6-1. Redshirt sophomore Matija Matic and redshirt junior Evan Fragistas played at doubles two and also had a quick start, getting a 6-2 win.
Drake had a 1-0 lead over Oral Roberts heading into singles play. Jarvis played at the singles five position. He was the first Bulldog to win a singles match. Jarvis cruised through his match, winning it 6-0, 6-1.
Fragistas won his singles match at singles four. Fragistas got off to a quick start in the match winning the first set 6-1 and then quickly won the second set 6-1.
At singles six sophomore Markus Bolin clinched the match for Drake, after winning his match 6-2, 6-4. At the end of Bolin’s match the Bulldogs led 4-0 in the team score.
Matic got another point for Drake at the singles two position. Matic had a close first set, but was able to pull it out and get a 6-4 win.
Matic then cruised through the second set winning it 6-2 and helping Drake win, 5-2, over Oral Roberts.
Drake Men’s tennis took to the courts shortly after their win against Oral Roberts. The Bulldogs took on the Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday, March 27 in the Roger Knapp Center at home.
The Bulldogs got two doubles wins from the doubles two and three position. The doubles two spot consisted of Jarvis and Clegg. Doubles two won their set 6-2.
Doubles three had Bolin and first-year Olle Sonesson Lidholt sweeping their opponents, getting a 6-0 win. Drake went into the singles matches with a 1-0 lead over the Golden eagles. Drake picked up four more points after the completion of singles.
At singles two, Fragistas cruised through his match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Stefan Dragovic. Clegg quickly won his match after sweeping his opponent 6-0 in the first set and then winning the second set 6-1.
Matic won his match at singles one. Matic took the first set 6-2 and then battled in the second set winning it 7-6 to take the match in straight sets.
Bolin played in the singles three position for this match and fought his way to get another match for Drake. Bolin won the first set 6-4. He then lost a close second set 4-6, but then bounced right back to win the third set 6-3. This helped Drake get a 5-2 win over Marquett University.
“I continued to stick to the game plan for the whole match,” Bolin said. “I’m glad I was able to get a point for my team”.
At the end of the weekend, Matic went 3-0.
“I think the team had a strong weekend at home,” Matic. “I’m happy with how I competed this weekend, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season looks like for us.”
The Bulldogs remain undefeated at home after adding two more home wins to their record they are now 5-0 for home matches. Drake men’s tennis will travel to Illinois State this upcoming weekend to compete against Illinois State.
