This year marked the 77th annual Sweetheart Sing, performed by Drake University’s fraternities and sororities.
In this show, Greek chapters perform skits with musical numbers featuring popular artists of today.
It is put on for family and friends during Parents and Family Weekend. The theme this year was “Heard it on the Radio.” The students performed two shows, one on Wednesday for students and one on Saturday.
Students and their families came to support Greek Life on campus. Tickets were $7 to help raised money for Children’s Cancer Connection of Iowa.
Each year, Sweetheart Sing raises money for a different charity or local cause.
Ten total houses performed for the show this year. Alpha Delta Pi sorority released its inner rocker with Pink. Theta Chi fraternity performed Maroon Five. Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority sang Taylor Swift music. Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity rocked out to Miles Davis. Alpha Phi sorority went all out for Beyoncé. FIJI won over the audience with Jason Mraz .Delta Gamma sorority performed Kelly Clarkson. Kappa Alpha Theta sorority went all out for Katy Perry. Sigma Phi Epsilon brought its “Suit and Tie” for Justin Timberlake. Sigma Chi made the audience swoon with One Direction.
“Sweetheart Sing is always so much fun to go to,” junior Rory Steward said. “Pretty much all the girls in ADPi can sing because they are in choir, and most of FIJI is in Brochal chords, the a cappella group on campus. Everyone is very talented.”
“My favorite was Sigma Phi Epsilon performing One Direction,” said first-year Sarah Joan. “I liked them the best because they had awesome dance moves. I cannot wait to perform next year with my house.”
“This is my third year doing it, and I plan on doing it again next year,” said junior Danielle Walla. “My favorite part is seeing how each sorority and fraternity ends up utilizing the songs by their artists and making a storyline out of it. It’s also awesome to show that the Greek system as a whole can come together to support Children’s Cancer Connection and each other even with some friendly competition.”
