For the first time since 1993, the Drake softball team can claim the title of Missouri Valley Conference champions.
The softball team hit their biggest roadblock of the season to date, going 1-4 over the past week, losing to Iowa State, Northern Iowa and two games to Bradley over the weekend of Drake Relays. The Bulldogs record fell to 28-18 overall and 17-7 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Drake continued their hot streak on the diamond, sweeping four games over the past week against the University of Iowa State and Southern Illinois University in two away matches.
Drake Softball has been successful so far in 2015 as the midway point of the regular season has come and gone. They lead the Missouri Valley Conference with a record of 25-13. One of the team’s catalysts is pitcher Rebekah Schmidt, who was just named as the MVC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season.
Every season brings excitement and intense competition to Des Moines, but this past year has been especially exciting for us Bulldogs. From buzzer beaters to last second touchdowns to tournament victories and upset, you never know what’s going to happen in Drake Athletics.
Drake maintained their lead in the Missouri Valley Conference this weekend by sweeping an energetic Loyola University team in a three game series.
Even though the Bulldogs were unable to pull off the three-game sweep in extra innings on Sunday, they still took two games on the road against Wichita State.
The Women’s Softball team competed against Evansville this weekend, sweeping the Purple Aces in three games at Ron Buel Field here at Drake.
Drake Softball played five games in Fort Collins this past weekend, coming away with two wins.
