In the Judea-Christian tradition, the immutable priority of God over sex was established by the ritual of circumcision. At least, that is one of the rationales given by the rabbis. If God is an absolute priority, how far is “too extreme” in the conquest of wayward sexual desire? And is not all religious ecstasy but a poor substitute for – a displacement – of sexual ecstasy? On the other hand, why doesn’t Christianity speak out against the terrible atrocity of (male and female) genital mutilation? Ostensibly Christian nations are bereft of leadership on this crucial issue.
