The All-University flag football championship was held this Friday. Drake intramurals got a feel for the big times under the lights at Drake Stadium. The champions from the fraternity competitive league, SigEp, versus the men’s ‘A’ league champs On the Pharm. Everything was extra-special for this game, but before we get into a recap, here are some of the special changes made for our intramurals champs.
The most notable change of this game was the officials. The officials ran a four-man team. The four-man set up included a head referee, line judge, back judge and a side judge. There was even an official in charge of a dial-a-down. The officials also stepped up their wardrobe. Each had a professional, striped shirt and black pants. They were very dashing, if I do say so myself.
Another noticeable change was the clock. A typical intramural game has two 20-minute halves. However, for this game there were four 12-minute quarters. After each quarter, teams switched directions. The other change in this game was within the last two minutes of each half. Usually the clock only stops in the last two minutes. In this game though, the clock stopped in the last two minutes of the first and second halves. In addition to those clock changes, the scorekeeper in the booth was in charge of the official clock.
Those changes might not seem like a big deal, but they help give the championship game a little extra authority.
For those of you unable to attend the championship game, you are in luck — here is a quick recap.
After the coin toss, SigEp came up with the win and chose to defer for ball in the second half. As a result, On The Pharm started with the ball. Even though On The Pharm technically lost the toss, it ended up in its favor. On The Pharm dominated the first quarter. It used up half of the quarter with a drive down the field. All of its hard work was rewarded with a touchdown. On The Pharm converted the extra point and finished up the first quarter with a score of 7-0.
SigEp had the ball starting the second quarter. It wasn’t long before it responded to On The Pharm’s touchdown with one of its own. SigEp scored despite the illegal use of hands penalty against On The Pharm. SigEp decided to decline the penalty and take the touchdown, a pretty good choice, in my opinion. However, SigEp failed to convert the extra point. The score going into the half was 7-6, On The Pharm.
SigEp started with the ball in the second half. The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle until the last three minutes. SigEp scored its second touchdown of the game. From then on, SigEp showed why it’s undefeated this season. With one more touchdown in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter, SigEp came away with the win. The final score was 20-7, SigEp. Both teams played a great game and a great season.
Your helpful hint of the day is for those lucky intramurals champions. If you are on the roster and have played more than two games, you can receive a shirt. Go to the Bell Center and talk to Bill Moorman. As always stay safe and play ball!
